A brewery older than its beer
The brewery was founded before the first Skopsko was poured. Research by HAEMUS, a centre for the study of Balkan history and culture, found that the company was registered in Belgrade on 2 September 1922 under the name Parna Pivara AD, the Steam Brewery of Skopje, and that production of the beer began in August 1924. Wikipedia likewise dates the founding to 1922 and the start of brewing to 1924.
The brewery’s own history adds that its Czech founders built the plant near Skopje, that the first beer followed an old Czech recipe, and that the company passed into state ownership in January 1945.
Heineken and Coca-Cola HBC
Since 1998, Pivara Skopje has been a joint venture of Heineken and the bottler Coca-Cola HBC, which together bought the majority stake that year. In December 2011 the two companies bought a further 41.2 per cent of the shares, raising their combined holding to 96.5 per cent; Coca-Cola Hellenic described Pivara Skopje at the time as the largest beer and soft-drinks company in the country, producing brands of both groups.
The beer in the glass
Skopsko pours golden yellow under a firm white head. The In Your Pocket city guide calls it the Skopje-brewed market leader, Wikipedia calls it the most popular beer in North Macedonia, and the brewery calls it by far the largest beer brand in the country. The range has grown around the flagship lager: In Your Pocket notes that the brewery also makes a rare dark beer, which Wikipedia dates to December 2014, and the brewery lists Skopsko Smooth, a cold-filtered, unpasteurised version at 4.5 per cent alcohol, alongside a wheat beer and a radler.
A hundred years of Skopsko
In June 2024, Alfa reported the launch of a campaign marking the brand’s hundredth year, built around the stories of brewers, athletes, musicians and ordinary drinkers, young and old. The celebrations culminated in a large birthday event in Skopje’s City Park, which Media Marketing, a regional trade magazine, said drew more than 50,000 people, with 600 barrels arranged to form the number 100.
Skopsko is also tied to tradition. Pivara Skopje says it has been part of the Galičnik Wedding festival for half a century, and Wikipedia records a special Skopsko can made for the 2026 festival showing the Teškoto dance.
In Emblem World, Skopsko pivo sits in the North Macedonia drink collection, where people discover and rate local food, drink and music.
