About this Emblem
A rider in armour crosses the night beside a great mill wheel. The Emblem tells the legend of Menesk, the giant said to have founded Minsk on the Svisloch River. His stone mill had seven wheels and ground boulders instead of grain, and each midnight he rode out to gather strong and brave people around it. The town that grew there took his name. Minsk first appears in the chronicles in 1067, by the Nemiga River, which now flows underground beneath the city's oldest quarter.
