About this Emblem
A knight in armour keeps watch from a carved stone niche, his sword planted and his shield on his arm, as guards once did at the city's gates. The Emblem is collected at the Gate of Dawn, built between 1503 and 1522 in the walls of Vilnius and the only one of its city gates still standing. In the chapel above the arch, a painting of the Virgin Mary is venerated by Catholic and Orthodox believers alike.
